A new theater dedicated to anime opened June 29 in Tokyo's Asagaya district, home to an art cinema, animation studios and art schools.

The Chiisana Gakko Gekijo is operated by Laputa Art Animation School, which turned its 45-seat screening room into a mini theater open to the public.

Chiisana Gakko Gekijo will screen 52 works of animation created by Laputa Art Animation School students under the title of "Daisuki Art Animation." The theater will show the works in four programs until July 8.

The mini theater is also slated to screen a documentary film featuring legendary Russian animation artist Yuriy Norshteyn in late July, and a special program dedicated to animation artist Yoji Kuri in late September.

The cinema will also publicize and distribute animated works for theatrical release. The venue can be rented for screenings and other purposes for 10,000 yen ($125) per hour.

Asagaya is also known for the Laputa Asagaya theater complex. It hosts the Laputa International Animation Festival and presents the Yuriy Norshteyn Award to recognize outstanding works of animation.

The Laputa Art Animation School was established at the suggestion of Norshteyn. The institute offers a three-year day program and a one-year night program to teach stop motion and cutout animation production, with Kuri and Fumiko Magari serving as instructors.

The school has produced many award-winning anime works including "Crawfish," which was recognized at the recent Tokyo Anime Awards.
