米国視覚効果協会賞　長編アニメーション関連は「ランゴ」が独占

　2月7日、米国ビバリーヒルズのビバリーヒルトンホテルで、第10回米国視覚効果協会賞（VES Awards）の各部門受賞作品・受賞者が発表された。視覚効果協会賞は、この分野の専門家約2000名から構成される米国ビジュアルエフェクトソサエティが主催する。VFXと呼ばれる映画、テレビ番組、コマーシャル、ゲーム、PVなどの映像における視覚効果の実績・成果を評価するために 設けられ、2003年より行われている。
　同業者の厳しい評価により選ばれた作品、映像は、まさにその年のVFX業界を一望するものだ。賞に対する注目は近年高まりを見せている。

　第10回は、VFX映画、一般映画、アニメーション映画、テレビ番組、コマーシャルなどのジャンルから23部門が設けられた。なかでも注目の高い最優秀VFX賞（VFX部門）（Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture）には『猿の惑星：創世記』、最優秀VFX賞（一般部門）（Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Motion Picture）では『ヒューゴの不思議な発明』が受賞した。
　
　最優秀VFX賞アニメーション映画部門では、2011年のアニメーション映画の賞レースを席巻する『ランゴ』が選ばれている。『ランゴ』はこのほか、アニメーションキャラクター（Animated Character）、アニメーション環境（Created Environment）、仮想映像撮影（アニメーション映画部門）（Virtual Cinematography）と、アニメーション映画関連の4部門を独占した。
　『ランゴ』は2011年の高い評価を受けたが、それが物語や演出だけでなく高い技術力に裏付けたされたものであることを裏付ける。これまでCGアニメーション制作では、ピクサーが常に先頭を走って来たが、他のスタジオが急速に力をつけつつあることも示していそうだ。
